Sinopec employee ‘accused of accepting bribe’ over engineering contract
An employee at a subsidiary of the state-owned oil company Sinopec has been accused of accepting a bribe of 60,000 yuan (HK$76,000), a mainland media report said.
Qiao Hongcheng, aged 28, is alleged to have taken the cash from a company after it was awarded a contract for an engineering project, Beijing Television reported.
Qiao has attended a court hearing in the Chaoyang district of the capital.
He was reported to the authorities by his father-in-law after Qiao’s wife found out he was having an affair, the report said.
Qiao is alleged to have given 30,000 yuan to 40,000 yuan of the bribe to his wife and the rest to his girlfriend in Beijing, who had no knowledge of each other.
When Qiao’s girlfriend found out about his wife, she called her up. His wife then divorced him.
Qiao joined a subsidiary of China Petroleum Chemical Corporation, also known as Sinopec, in the capital after graduating with a master’s degree from Xian Jiaotong University in 2011, the report said.
Qiao said he was involved in the bidding for the engineering project in 2012 and he was later approached by an employee of the winning company from Shanghai.
“He told me, as is common practice in the industry, I’ll give you three per cent commission,” he said. “It was the first time I did this. I didn’t understand the industry rules,” he was quoted as telling the court.
The report did not say if Qiao had pleaded guilty or contested any charges.
Qiao’s parents travelled from Shanxi province to attend the hearing, Beijing Television reported.
His mother told the TV station: “My son made a mistake. His parents didn’t educate him well.”
